One of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites in India is the Grishneshwar Temple, which is devoted to Lord Shiva. It is home to the 12th and last Jyotirlinga on earth, and is situated approximately 2 km from the UNESCO-listed Ellora Caves and about 35 km from the city of Aurangabad. The Shiva Purana, one of Hinduism's holy books, makes reference of this ancient sanctuary. The temple, which is thought to have been constructed in the 13th century, saw numerous Mughal-era rebuildings and destructions until being restored in its current configuration in the 18th century. The temple now functions as both a religious place and a major tourist attraction in Maharashtra, especially for visitors visiting the Ellora Caves.
